UA Complete Count Committee Prepares for Decennial Census

The Decennial Census is quickly approaching and GCR is leading efforts to be sure the UA has a complete count.  Students and renters are both traditionally hard groups to count, so it will take a well-organized campaign to get the word out about the importance of participating.

Many UA students were still in elementary school the last time a Census was taken, so they may not understand the importance of an accurate count, including:

  • Distribution of more than $675 billion annually in federal funds back to tribal, state and local governments.
  • Determination of Congressional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • Redistricting of state legislative districts
  • Forecasting of future transportation needs
  • Determining areas eligible for housing assistance and rehabilitation loans
  • Assisting federal, tribal, state, and local governments in planning and implementing programs and services and emergency response.

The UA Complete Count Committee met again this week and will be reaching out to partners across campus asking for assistance sharing some facts about the 2020 Census.

UA Student Surprised with Scholarship from Arizona Lottery

In other news, fourth-year University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix medical student Dario Alvarez was surprised June 13 with a $25,000 tuition scholarship from the Arizona Lottery. Surrounded by family, friends, medical school leadership, Arizona Lottery officials and a contingent of Arizona Wildcat cheerleaders, Alvarez was overcome with emotion when he realized the celebration was in his honor. 

Awarding the scholarship is a way of highlighting the many ways the Arizona Lottery gives back to the community. Last year alone, Lottery proceeds paid for $39.6 million in capital improvements to the state’s three universities. Read the full story here.

UA Alumna Recognized in Phoenix State of the City Address

On June 13, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego delivered her inaugural State of the City address at the Sheraton Grand hotel in downtown Phoenix. Among the topics addressed, Mayor Gallego underscored the need for additional investments in growing Arizona’s medical schools to tackle Arizona’s physician and nurse shortage.

Mayor Gallego thanked Dr. Sarah Coles, UA College of Medicine – Phoenix Alumna and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine, for choosing to live, learn, and practice in Phoenix. Mayor Gallego was sworn into office March 21, 2019, as the 61st Mayor for the City of Phoenix. She is the city’s second elected female mayor.
