Regents Set to Approve UA Annual Budget at June ABOR Meeting

June 17, 2019

Several items of UA interest were up for consideration Thursday at the June meeting of the Arizona Board of Regents in Flagstaff. Regents provided final approval to lease space in DC for the UA Center for Outreach and Collaboration.

The Center will house a variety of UA programs and offices, including UA’s federal relations office, the National Institute for Civil Discourse, subject matter experts from our Research, Discovery and Innovation Office and the soon-to-be-created Semester in Washington Presidential Fellowship Program.

The UA also intends to build out space for visiting faculty and staff, alumni, donor, and stakeholder groups to utilize when in Washington, D.C.

ABOR developed an initial plan to disburse $15M in annual funding provided by the state to fund student scholarships as part of the Arizona Teachers Academy. Dollars will be awarded to the universities and Maricopa and Pima community college districts based on the number of students intended to participate in each institution’s respective teacher training programs. Regents approved this plan on Thursday.

Regents and provosts from all three public universities adopted a new policy intended to “enhance university collaboration, communication, and cooperation without impeding competition in the management and offering of new academic programs and programs in new locations throughout Arizona."

The UA had three new academic programs up for consideration, all of which were approved:

  • Master of Science in Biosystems Analytics and Technology – Main Campus
  • Ph.D. in Biosystems Analytics and Technology – Main Campus
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership and Regional Commerce – UA South
