Governor’s Office Staff Visit to Arizona State Museum

June 3, 2019

Late last month, members of Governor Ducey’s team visited the Arizona State Museum (ASM) to learn about the Museum’s mission and better understand its relationship with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The Museum serves as the State of Arizona’s official archaeological repository and acts as the permitting authority for archaeological activity on state land. ASM and SHPO are both governed by state and federal laws with strict mandates and protocols governing historic preservation, many overlapping.

This meeting among state agencies, UA Government and Community Relations, and the Governor’s Office was an opportunity to open lines of communication with the hopes of exploring ways to increase communication and develop collaborative solutions to improve the customer experience as it pertains to historical preservation.

Dr. Patrick Lyons, Director of the Arizona State Museum, and his team treated staff in attendance to a behind-the-scenes tour and a special viewing of some of the collections housed within the Museum. The Governor’s staff appreciated the tour and hospitality of Museum staff; they promised it would not be their last visit to campus. The Governor was represented by:

  • Hunter Moore, Policy Advisor on Natural Resources
  • Kaitlin Harrier, Budget Policy Advisor
  • Sarah Pirzada, Deputy Chief Operating Officer
  • Rob Wood, Administrator, Government Transformation Office
